The seventh graders began their first History block looking back at the "Dark Ages" and then learned how such factors as the growth of towns, the rise of the guilds, and the expansion of Europe's world conception via returning Crusaders led to such transformative new steps as the Gothic cathedral, the rise of the university, and birth of city-states. The lives of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Joan of Arc epitomized the change and challenges of this time period.
